  • Definition and Impact: Dementia is a term used to describe a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is a syndrome resulting from various underlying conditions, not a single disease.
  • Common Causes: The second thing to know about dementia is that it is caused by neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinson’s disease dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease: The most common cause of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, involves the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, leading to the death of brain cells.
  • Lewy Body Dementia: This type of dementia is characterized by the presence of abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies in brain cells.
