3 Things You Should Know Before Getting Married

Marriage is a dream for most young people. They struggle with parental expectations and often end up in the wrong relationship. They lack counsel in matters of marriage, with only what they have observed from those who have gone before as their own guide. We help understand the prerequisites of a great marriage through our premarital counselling program.

Among the secrets that one should have in mind include:

God instituted marriage and requires certain principles to be adhered to. The parties to a godly marriage are a perfect man and a perfect woman. A perfect man or woman is one who dwells in the presence of God. Dwelling together is possible when there is communication, listening, and talking to each other. What is there to talk about with God? God speaks through his creation in general and specifically through the Holy Scriptures. When man and woman meditate upon the Word of God through reading and praying the Bible, they dwell in his presence. A man who listens and talks to God is one who is eligible to get married.

The purpose of marriage is sanctification or perfection. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, man and woman became imperfect. God in his love started the perfection process and accomplished it through the death and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the foundation of the Church, his body. His church is obligated to accomplish the work that Jesus started, the perfection of all the people. Marriage is equated with the church, with a man taking the responsibility of Christ in the marriage. He is then given authority to accomplish this task, just as Christ was given authority. An understanding of one’s responsibility and its relationship to authority is needed before one gets married. Responsibility comes first and without it, one should not enter a marriage covenant.

Marriage is for eternity and should not be broken. Just as the church cannot be terminated by the gates of hell, a godly marriage has the assurance of continuity no matter what happens in the relationship.

In conclusion, one who enters the covenant of marriage should be ready to adhere to the principles established by the creator of marriage, accept responsibility before authority and burn the bridges to singlehood.
