Have you lost someone or something you valued?

This may have left you with such feelings as:

Angry…..

Angry with yourself for not stopping the loss,

Angry with others for not stopping the loss or coming to your help when you are experiencing all the pain.

Angry with the person whom you lost for not fighting to stay with you….

And even angry with God for doing nothing about the loss

It is a normal reaction to the loss.

What is not normal is to remain in this experience for a long time. Help is available to progress to wellness.

Guilty?

Was there something you could have done to prevent the loss?

Shame?

Depending on the type of loss, you may feel ashamed that you lost.

Keeping any of these feelings takes time and energy. The energy drain may be followed by behaviours such as;

Reliving the experience by thinking about it day and night. During the day one may have flashbacks and nightmares at night? Concentration at work or school may become difficult, leading to poor performance, conflicts, etc. This may continue to a loss of interest in things that one has previously enjoyed, with a person withdrawing from friends and family.

Avoidance of all reminders of the experience, including people, places, and emotions. This may include addictions to alcohol or drugs to avoid feeling angry, guilty or shame of the loss.

Being on alert all the time could lead to sleepless nights, headaches, stomach aches, panic attacks, etc.

Grieving is the process of recovering from a loss instead of living through all the above emotional and physical turmoil.

What is grieving?

Grieving is mourning (expression of sorrow) the loss of someone or something. Apart from death, one can mourn such other losses as divorce/separation, loss of a body part or function, loss of a job, or chronic health diagnosis among many others.

Using Trauma Healing Institute materials, we help you to grieve in a way that brings healing. It is a three-stage journey that one can take as he or she develops resilience.
