Why Sharing Your Emotional Burdens Helps

You may have heard it said that a problem shared is a problem solved. What you may not know is how all this works in your mind and heart.
When you suffer, you try to make sense of life and of who God is. That is why you may have found yourself asking whether God exists, whether he has limited power and is unable to stop some problems, and whether he loves you or not.
In this state of emotional instability, you may feel lonely and helpless. Having a caring person to listen to you helps you in three ways:
First, it helps you to gain an honest understanding of what happened to you.
Suffering happens to everyone in a lifetime. When you have someone to listen to you, you can put into perspective the events surrounding your suffering together with their timelines, including the minutest details. This helps you to see your reality clearly as you start to accept your new situation. Acceptance of reality, as opposed to denial, is a critical part of the restoration of your senses.
Second, it helps you to associate your feelings with what happened to you. Once you can name your feelings, you can express them as opposed to continued avoidance which may lead to more serious repercussions such as addictions and conflicts in interpersonal relationships. Expressing your feelings is important in emotional fitness and growth.
Lastly, it helps one to be able to trust God for healing from the emotional pain that accompanies negative events. This is a moment of self-talk where one answers the same questions that they started with proclamations of thanksgiving to God. You may have listened to songs or read testimonies from people who have undergone suffering and have come to believe that God used the suffering to draw them to himself. These people acknowledge that the outcome is something they cannot exchange with anything under the sun.
